Leather Carving

Description:

In this four-week introduction, students will be introduced to the basics of leather carving and have the opportunity to hone their skills on a small project which they will take all the way from design to completion. Students will select from among a series of projects that could involve extensive carving, such as a wallet or belt. We will go over the fundamental tools and techniques for leather carving and coloring, becoming comfortable with use of the head knife, awl, needles & thread, and dyes.

Class Goals:

By the end of this class, students will be comfortable with the fundamental tools and techniques for leather carving and coloring, and will have designed, fabricated, and finished their own original leather project.

Prerequisites:

None.

Materials:

Leather, painting/dying materials, and basic tools, all purchaseable from the instructor. Basic tools from the Intro to Leatherworking class can be used.

Full tooling and materials are likely to cost between $85 and $100 (the head knife represent half of that), but students will keep any purchased tools at the end of class for use on further projects. Students are encouraged to bring a notebook and pencil to class for taking notes.

Full materials list for those who have their own tools, or are interested in purchasing independently: head knife, awl, needles, thread, dye, belt buckle/hardware, leather, jeweler's rouge, plain brown paper, paint brushes, a notebook, and a cloth ruler.
